New ’31’ Trailer Drops

RZ 31 poster

Okay, so I am pretty late to the party on this one but a new trailer has surfaced for Rob Zombies upcoming horror flick ‘31‘.Telling the tale of 5 carnival workers kidnapped and forced to take part in a deadly game called 31 a day before Halloween. Each person must survive playing 31 for 12 hours while being hunted by killer clowns (and if you may have seen my previous opinion piece on clowns and horror movies then it is no surprise that I am super stoked for this.)

This new trailer shows highlights of some brutal murders and close ups of our villains, who all look brilliantly insane and includes a peek at a murderer in a bunny rabbit outfit too (yep!)

This movie has been on my list for a long time and the new trailer shows it too be what I feel will be Zombie’s greatest movie to date, it looks fun, gory and some scares along the way.

Anyway, have a watch of the trailer and let me know what you think.

What’s up with the clowns?

clown-scary-UK-311857

Clowns make a great villain in a horror movie, the creepy face paint which masks any emotion bar a permanent smile.

Clowns in horror movies is a match made in heaven, it is a perfect fit.

Emotionless – check

Creepy appearance – check

Alien and/or Supernatural  – check .. .Wait what?

Remember that feeling of dread, the absolute unadulterated horror of hearing those first words.

‘Aren’t you gonna say hello’

Now personally i was fucking terrified of Pennywise and I’d make a safe guess that many horror fans were also by Pennywise in Stephen King’s ‘IT‘,  meh the Killer Klowns from Outta Space entertained and hell the full blown clown in ‘Clown’ was creepy.

My problem with clown horror movies at the minute is where are they? Even going back to ‘IT’ Pennywise was a otherworldly being, the clown from ‘Clown’ came from a cursed suit the guy found. Everything of recent times is going down the supernatural route and frankly I think that is just the lazy way. Now im not saying these movies are bad by any stretch, I mean some are awful*.

*Looking at you Killjoy.

But my point is clowns are enough by themselves to warrant a lead antagonist role in a major horror without any bullshit demon/supernatural aspect. Now as always there are plenty of smaller movies that do have just a clown with no frills. Clownhouse, 100 Tears ,  and Fear Of Clowns immediately come to mind, each varying in overall quality. It does seem to be the smaller/indie horror movies more and more introducing clowns as villains (Maybe a human is cheaper than the effects needed for a supernatural villain? Just an assumption i don’t know)

Clownhouse
Clownhouse A genuinely good clown horror flick

Some get it right, some overdo the humour a clown should have but still for me personally a big budget horror movie involving a clown = money.

Too often these big budget horror flicks fail to deliver on the most important aspect of the movie, the horror. Maybe we are desensitized, maybe they are just not that good or maybe.. Just maybe it’s too predictable and far fetched with the ghosts and portals to other worlds, the possessions of both humans and inanimate objects. At least a murderous human clown is at the least realistic and can play on the idea of this could really happen. This does really happen.

Surely it’s not too much to ask for, I do feel strongly about this as I also think clowns legitimately scare many people so it’s annoying this does not get portrayed in film more often. Anyway that’s just my opinions/rants on the matter, if you read this and agree let me know, don’t agree then let me know.
